[Phase-1] HIP–XX: Remove the Mission Board Member Role

At this point the board has shown that it is more dangerous to governance than helping.
The electoral method not being proportional leaves no space for opposition and currently 3 seats are de facto occupied by Santi:

  • Valen doesn’t understand much (look at the debate) and just follows what Santi says.
  • Justin is unreachable (I tried contacting him many times and never got an answer) but he miraculously managed to vote on a snapshot like Santi while not answering on telegram.

This centralization of power had led Santi to make an attempted coup (changing the voting rules) only to realize that it wouldn’t work as the Kleros governor would be unlikely to enforce decisions made with a tempered snapshot.

At this point the board is more of a liability and suspending it / getting rid of it may be the way to go.

I think that both sides of the table perceived a threatening action. Take into consideration that the Snapshot resolution from a Mission Board consisting of 5 members, all of them democratically elected, has undoubtebly questioned the actions taken by @clesaege with a vote 3 to 2. You can aim to perform an ad hominem argumentation against them but that won’t change the result of the Mission Board resolution. Which not only had all 5 members voting on it, but also 10+ activist votes appeared on the Snapshot page agreeing with the board.

Delegations are not mandatory yet every single profile from Burma :myanmar: has suspiciously delegated right from the get go to @clesaege. This fact remains proven by the Etherscan transactions exposed in the board resolution and the edits around the document allegedly offered to these users. This act has opened up the debate around delegations, one that the DAO very much deserves so since it never had the chance to vote about this issue before.

As I had expressed in other channels of the community, I believe that leadership in the web3 ecosystem should also be an improvement to the standard practices of legacy politics. And in one of the aspects I hope we get to breed better leaders is in the fact that we can be indeed people able to listen as much as being capable of talking. The actions we all take now regarding our young DAO are foundational actions that help set a precedent on what’s proper and what is not proper in our political culture.

In that regard, it was after a thoughtful conversation I had with @AvsA and @juanu yesterday, that I understood that we are facing an extraordinary chance to demonstrate that in spite of Board Resolutions, the Board cannot and should not be able to change the voting rules established by the DAO. This is the most relevant insight I can capture from this political conflict and in my responsibility to lead with example I have backed down from suspending delegations since I agree that the legal implications of such action are neither clear nor explicit.

Moving forward, I consider valid the concerns expressed by @clesaege, @Mads and others that this is now a moment where forking can become beneficial to us all. With that in mind, I will work with you all on helping establish a clear path where both sides of the community can move forward.

You are making baseless accusations that I would be farming delegations. That’s completely false. The docs (which was translated by my girlfriend on my iPad as it can be set with a Bamar keyboard) was on the contrary an attempt to have people delegate to a wider range of people.
I’ve always advised to have more people to act as delegate and especially delegates speaking the language of people delegating to them.
You can see on people I know and vouched for that most of them didn’t delegate to me.

You are accusing me of farming delegations while I was, on the opposite, unable to prevent people to delegate me even when trying to.
If I was farming/controlling people, do you really think I would have asked everyone to delegate to my public address?
You may think I’m on the opposite side, but you know I am not stupid.

Note that there is no rules against campaigning (or even campaigning for someone) which were broken and you are trying to use the fact that I tried to have people delegate to a wider range of delegates as evidence that I was manipulating everything.

People will be able to make their opinions and I think a bunch of them already saw your desire of having full power (people just there to serve as extra votes for you in the board, asking the groups that you own to be the official ones, changing the rules of the vote, making proposals stating that the votes of people who oppose you don’t count).

It isn’t surprising that Santi though that I was acting in a unethical and power-grabby manner. Because this is the way he has been acting from the start.

Example of messages I sent to people I know onboarding people. Despite that I still received a large share of delegations.

Resolution saying my vote on the resolution is invalid

Thanks @clesaege for providing more clarity on the motives behind your actions, helping us understand who were involved with you on doing this and giving more detailed documentation.

I’m sure a more open communication before these events happened rather than after we detected them on Etherscan would’ve lead to a better understanding of the context. The concerns of the community need to be addressed with transparency.

I was also directly involved onboarding users from slums in Argentina as seen in the efforts led by Proof of Integrity. Yet I personally never considered ethical to recommend users coming from a vulnerable population to delegate to myself. In my opinion, delegating should be a consequence of an informed decision everyone should do with freedom and with real knowledge about how the DAO works and it’s governance practices. In Argentina :argentina: we know too well and we repúdiate the political practices that lead to clientelism.

That said, I’m ready to move past this chapter and work on the forking process.

Neither did I. The initial people that we onboarded are not “vulnerable” (from a financial perspective) but family members or people knowing family members (who obviously were really likely to delegate to me as I was the only delegate they know) who constitute the majority of the delegations.
Moreover I didn’t recommend delegating to myself. I for sure recommended delegating as I’ve been doing before but not to myself.

After that it spread out and I don’t have control over whom they delegate (if I had control, they wouldn’t have delegated to me).

Trying to portray as victims incapable of making decisions people I know (the first FUD was around the mother of my partner) is patronizing, and let’s say it, clearly racist.

Abusing of on-boarded people to make delegations against their will is something which has been done by your side (by Valen), so obviously you believe other people are doing the same.

Yo tampoco.
Además, no recomendé delegarme a mí mismo.

There’s a big difference between campaigning for delegations, which many people did and getting 50+ profiles delegating to someone the very second they where created, without exceptions and in a short period of time. Delegations are not mandatory yet apparently in Burma :myanmar: looks like they were.

This shadowy action without any public announcement until after the Board demanded explanations raised suspicions to a significant part of the community.

You can’t refuse delegations. And yes I definitely encouraged people to delegate (and it looks like this spread out), but I didn’t encourage to delegate to me.

I already explained multiple time that I vouched and encouraged to vouch a bunch of humans that I or my family know. Out of the people I vouched I’d say that maybe around half delegated to me.
On people I didn’t interact with, I can’t tell you anything.

It’s weird how according to Etherscan everyone decided to create a profile on Proof of Humanity and a few minutes later suddenly delegate to you exactly the same way. But sure, let’s take your word for it and move forward debating what to do with delegations on HIP 63.

Delegating when registering should be the normal flow (as done in ENS and Optimism front ends) and I did show to a few people how to do that. This doesn’t mean that I’m wondering around buying delegations.

If that is what you think, then find someone I asked to delegate to me in exchange of anything. You won’t find anyone as this didn’t happen.

The accusation is not that you paid them, no one said that nor try to pretend it’s about that. It’s that you farmed the delegations in a clientelist manner.
